Maintain the Unique Character of Lençois
Because we value the history and beauty of Lençois' architecture, we inspired ourselves in the 19h Century Portuguese colonial style which adorns the charming façades of Lençóis’ houses.

Use Local Craftsmen and Labour

We believe it is important to use the talents and skills of local artists and laborers. All our construction work, up to the apartments' smallest details, was executed by local people. Parts of the doors and windows were built with eucaliptus timber by carpentry students from the Liceu de Arte.

Use Local and Eco-Friendly Materials

Our brickstones are actually compressed earth and cement blocks. Made on-site, the earth bricks are environmentally friendly because they contain very little cement and do not need to be burnt. The pousada was built with treated eucaliptus timber from reforestation, to ease the pressure on the local forest. Our walls are painted with lime and color from natural dyes, derived from stone, clay and urucum, which allow the walls to breath.

Maximize the Use of Natural Energy

The pousada´s shower water is heated using   solar power.

Recycle

The pousada composts its organic waste and recycles paper, plastic, glass and aluminum as well.

Conserve Water

The pousada uses a laundry system that minimizes the use of environmently harmful detergents (most of the products we use are 100% bio-degradable) and conserves water and energy.

Strive Towards Sustainability

The pousada grows some of the fruits and herbs that are used in the breakfast buffet (in breads, salads, juices and jams) in its own garden. The pousada uses fresh local cow´s milk to make its own cheese and yogurt.

Awards

In December 2001 Casa Claudia magazine awarded Pousada Vila Serrano a prize for ecologically friendly construction. Stephan Loose travel handbook 2006 mentions Vila Serrano as an establishment that is managed with environmental conciousness.
