The Chapada Diamantina |
The dramatically beautiful Chapada Diamantina (Diamond Highlands) is located in the center of the Northeastern state of Bahia and is 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) in size. Named after the diamond mining that ocurred here in the 19 th and early 20 th century, Chapada Diamantia offers a wide range of outdoor and cultural activities. Formed in 1986, the Chapada Diamantia National Park is located in the scenically diverse central-eastern edge of the range.
The Chapada Diamantia National Park receives the first rains, creating a more pleasant and ecologicaly spectacular environment than the rest of the Chapada. The rainy season normally starts in November and lasts until February, diminishing gradually towards mid-year. Remembered that the Chapada lies in a semi tropical area and so we are not talking about monsoon rains but just regular hard summer rains similar to ones you would get in Europe or the United States. During this time of the year, swimming in full rivers and waterfalls is an unforgettable experience and most of the time will not hinder your tours. There is usually a short dry-season which starts in August and can last until November, one of the best months to see the flowering orchids. There are hundreds of treking and tour opportunities that are available all year round and we can help you find experienced guides and provide information in English, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
The town of Lençóis, the favored starting point for trips into the park, is located 417 kilometers from Salvador. Due to its preservation of 19 th century Portuguese colonial architecture, Lençois was made a National Historical Monument in 1973.
After your trek, enjoy Lençóis´s relaxed atmosphere and have dinner in one of its excellent restaurants. |
